Winter music

I had this one as my profile song on Myspace for awhile, but I think it deserves a push into the light again. Although according to a trade mag, it was apparently used in an ep of "Gray's Anatomy" awhile back, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm perfectly content with songs I love getting some mainstream attention, and I have a great fondness for a well-placed song in any visual media, as my Myspace blog about the "ER" Freakout can attest. (My introduction to John Hiatt's incomparable "Have a Little Faith in Me" via "Benny & Joon" being another example I still vividly remember...love scenes being sort of tailored to pack an emotional wallop anyway...)

Maybe it's just because this song is so...spare...that I feel like it needs to be sheltered somehow. Nonetheless, courtesy Bon Iver:

Skinny Love

Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer

I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in the moment this order's tall

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind

In the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different kind
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines

Come on skinny love what happened here
Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
Now all your love is wasted?
Then who the hell was I?
Now I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

Ed. note: I disagree with some of the lyrics as listed above, but all five 'sites I checked matched, and since I bought the album on iTunes, I can't proof it for myself.

Yay! Song blogs are my favorite. I have to share this because the first few times I heard this song by the excellent Blitzen Trapper, I could scarecely hold back the tears. Think Bob Dylan only from Portland. Oh hell, just pay the 99 cents, I promise it is worth it.

"Furr"

Yeah, when I was only seventeen
I could hear the angels whispering
So I drove into the woods
And wandered aimlessly about
Until I heard my mother shouting through the fog
It turned out to be the howling of a dog
Or a wolf, to be exact
The sound sent shivers down my back
But I was drawn into the pack and before long
They allowed me to join in and sing their song
So from the cliffs and highest hills
Yeah, we would gladly get our fill
Howling endlessly and shrilly at the dawn
And I lost the taste for judging right from wrong
For my flesh had turned to fur
Yeah, and my thoughts they surely were
Turned to instinct and obedience to God

You can wear your fur
Like a river on fire
But you'd better be sure
If you're making God a liar
I'm a rattlesnake, babe,
I'm like fuel on fire
So if you're gonna get made
Don't be afraid of what you've learned

On the day that I turned 23
I was curled up underneath a dogwood tree
When suddenly a girl
Her skin the color of a pearl
She wandered aimlessly, but she didn't seem to see
She was listening for the angels just like me
So I stood and looked about
I brushed the leaves off of my snout
And then I heard my mother shouting through the trees
You should have seen that girl go shaky at the knees
So I took her by the arm
We settled down upon a farm
And raised our children up as gently as you please

And now my fur has turned to skin
And I've been quickly ushered in
To a world that, I confess, I do not know
But I still dream of running careless through the snow
Through the howling winds that blow
Across the ancient distant flow
To fill our bodies up like water till we know

You can wear your fur
Like a river on fire
But you'd better be sure
If you're making God a liar
I'm a rattlesnake, babe,
I'm like fuel on fire
So if you're gonna get made
Don't be afraid of what you've learned

Oh, I'm so excited to hear it! If my computer would stop ****blocking iTunes every time I try to open it up, I'd do it now. :)
